There's nothing like a great fitting pair of jeans and yet they can be hard to find unless you know the rules.   With the expert help of Renotta, www.shopatnextdoor.com who could write a book about styles, length, what shoes and tops to wear with what  etc........ and Lynee Follow That Girl , here is the answer.  "We have over 1300 pairs of jeans in our store and an all-consuming passion to find the perfect pair for everyone who walks through our door." We all look forward to answering your questions about jeans or healthy tasty food, because that is our passion.

JEAN SCENE BECAUSE WE THINK YOU SHOULD FIT IN YOUR JEANS

To What Length Should You Go? Adapted from 'Jean Scene' www.shopatnextdoor.com
and Follow That Girl the latest from Lynee
We could write a book about the length of jeans. Suffice it to say most jeans are too long and need to be shortened. If you're a jeanophile, you know that the original hem needs to be reattached. There's nothing worse than jeans looking like your mom chopped them off for you or shrunk them in the dryer. At 'Shop at Nextdoor', Milwaukee USA, we have perfected the art of reattaching the original hem so when you purchase your jeans, we'll shorten them for a small fee. But since you may not live here, here are a few hints you can apply.
Firstly, you need someone in the know re the 'New York' method of shortening jeans so your best bet would be your specialist jeans store or boutique.

The next decision is how long should they be? That's where we come in. Having shortened over ten thousand pairs, we feel we have something to say about it. For starters we're just going to deal with bootcut, flare, and trouser jeans. We'll leave the skinnies and leggings for next time. We all know we want to look fabulously tall and lean in our jeans even if we're not. So here's our rule of thumb: if your shoes show, your jeans are too short. You want your jeans to just skim the ground, about 1/4" short of dragging. It gives you that long continuous line even if it's an illusion for most of us.
The next thing you need to deal with is what shoes you will be wearing. Unfortunately, you can't wear one pair of jeans with flats, comfy heels, and killer spikes. We're good, but we're not magicians. You have to pick one height shoe and go with it. And yes, it means you have to have more than one pair of designer jeans. We'll say it again, there's nothing like a great fitting pair of jeans. And there's nothing worse than a pair of jeans that are too short!

Cropped pants and jeans great wear for summer and spring.

Hi R (and Elle and others with jeans too short)
Wish I was there with my clever friend as I have to confess  to a  severe 'taking up jeans New York style' mishap.
Yes, I know I should have actually done it when I was there with you  and  had the opportunity but thought I had got it!  And yes, why did I cut off the excess before checking the length?  Too late to ask these questions as the long and short of it, is my generous offer to take up my daughter's new jeans has ended in the most serious of cardinal sins - ie  they are too short!!!!

As you can imagine my heart sank at the realisation when I compared one leg to the other so in desperation I sought Mr Google's advice - one site suggested it was the fault of the tailor in these cases, but I already knew that thanks and was already armed with the replacement money when Elle picks up said jeans tomorrow.
But what to do with a perfectly good pair of jeans?  I attempted to try them on myself but alas, even though I have not just had a baby as she has, they didn't fit - then I googled 'cropped jeans in 2011' and found that they are now a trend so this post is to convince Elle to change her thinking.  Scroll down for the story.

  • "Cropped pants in shorter lengths are a great wear for spring, and are mostly worn for casual outings. They are a great change from the shorts and very feminine too!
  • For casual outings team the pants with tee shirts, vests and tunics. Always remember that if the pants are loose, do NOT wear loose tops as the look will be too casual, plus will add a few pounds to your frame. Wear well fitting tops, vests and tunics instead, over loose pants to balance the look. Team the look with flat sandals, gladiators or pumps. A lot of people prefer wearing sneakers with their cropped pants. Not my personal favorite though, the ‘sneaker’ look is  okay for a casual walk or going to the market.
  • Styles and cuts of cropped pants – based on your body type

Contrary to popular belief, cropped pants are great to be worn for all seasons – spring, summer and even winter and for all kinds of occasions – formal as well as casual. However, if you do not choose the right cut and length based on your body type, you may end up highlighting the not so flattering parts of your legs. A wrong cut and length of cropped pants can actually make your already broad calves look broader; you may end up looking shorter than your actual height and your bottom may end up looking bigger than it actually is!
We already know that cropped pants come in various lengths, what is essential to also know that they also come in various leg shapes – you have the comfortable, relaxed straight leg fit, or the flared leg fit and even the cigarette or pencil fit."         All is not lost. Clara

Aussie Granny shops for skinny jeans

"I shop therefore I am" - a new twist on an old saying.  I have been doing my best to kick start the American economy given that our dollar is stacking up so well.  R's beautiful store 'Shop at Next Door', stocks an extensive range of jeans with fabulous tops and accessories.

I have been learning all the ins and outs of how to wear skinny jeans - with boots of course but because we are coming into summer, also with killer heels, flats and flip flops.  R says that the worst mistake you can make when taking ups jeans is to make them too short - flared jeans need to be almost to the ground  but skinny jeans are a little tricky to get right.  Have them as long as you can make them without cupping the bottoms too much; a certain amount of cupping however is necessary for the look and with summer jeans you can fold up the bottoms for a casual look.

This is what she says on her site http://www.shopatnextdoor.com/  - click on Jean Scene at bottom of Home Page.

'No, you do not have to be skinny to wear skinny jeans. It's all about how you wear them that makes the difference. Going into a Wisconsin winter, we all know how great it is to throw on your favorite skinny jeans with a pair of boots and a big oversized sweater. It's the one time that living in the frozen tundra makes fashion fun as well as practical. But thankfully that is all behind us for another seven months or so. So now what? Well a picture is worth a thousand words. Wear skinny jeans with killer heels, your favorite flats, barefoot if the moment is right and of course your favorite flip flops. You can wear a skinny jean scrunched around your ankle or cuffed for a casual look. That solves some of the length issues, which is nice for us as well as you. Of course we'll always shorten them for you if need be.'

Off now to help take up some jeans - I am learning how to do a professional job but am under threat of dire conscequence if I devulge the secret.  Sorry!
Clara
ps - watch out for me G, at the airport - I'm the one in the skinny jeans.
