Woman I admire- Margaret Whitlam

Margaret Whitlam, wife of former Prime Minister of Australia in the 1970's  passed away at 92. 

We have spoken re writing about "Women We Admire" and this is my first entry re this genre.   I believe she wouldn't have wanted us to be saddened by her passing; rather to celebrate her life and achievements of which there are many.
Being married to a strong politican can't be easy - yet she appeared to achieve this with grace. Personally, I went through the Whitlam regime - at the time not being very politically minded either way. So when I look back at the reforms and social changes during this era, I somehow know there had to be a good strong woman behind the man.

Though all of the papers and all of the biographies describe her as the former prime minister's wife, it's the wrong description. She was Margaret Whitlam, leader of women and leader in women's rights and achievements.

Margaret Ollie - 1923 - 2011

I actually feel sad for some men / women who believe that 'winning' is the most important aspect of an exercise.

Margaret Hannah Olley (1923 – 26 July 2011) who passed away this week, is a fine example and was described as "Kind, fearless and a big heart". She will be remembered as an Australian painter of still life but she was also a great philanthropist.
John McDonald - art critic for SMH - "She would have wanted to be remembered as a painter but she was so active and generous it is difficult to sum up the scope of her achievements." ..... "She was a friend and mentor to younger artists..... bought art works for public collections ... helped provide funds for people in need....she had an eye for quality and a nose for bullshit ...... being unfailingly direct in her pronouncements."

She will be also be remembered for being the first recipient of the inaugural Mosman Art Prize in 1947, one of the first of it's kind at the time and was a frequent judge of works over the years. Her final exhibition which she was still working on with Phillip Bacon, will go ahead next year.

One Flaw In Women
Women have strengths that amaze men.....
They bear hardships and they carry burdens,
but they hold happiness, love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy
and laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in..
They stand up to injustice.
They don't take "no" for an answer
when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without so their family can have.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.
They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel
and cheer when their friends get awards.
They are happy when they hear about
a birth or a wedding.
Their hearts break when a friend dies.
They grieve at the loss of a family member,
yet they are strong when they
think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss
can heal a broken heart.
Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you
to show how much they care about you.
The heart of a woman is what
makes the world keep turning.
They bring joy, hope and love.
They have compassion and ideas.
They give moral support to their
family and friends.
Women have vital things to say
and everything to give..

HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN,
IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.

23 days left to complete a year of creating a piece each day

I've knit over 150 scarves so far and have at least another 50 to go just to use up the yarn that customers brought in.  I've taught Ula how to knit them and created a knitting monster. She loves it. June is also helping me, so now I mostly just sew them together. It's turning into a really great community project. Wish you were here...you are my missing link. 

Clara - thanks R.  It's been a year (what was the exact date?) since we reconnected through Facebook and you have enhanced and enriched my life in many ways, including a fabulous trip thanks to wonderful Roberto, where we caught up after 30 years to continue just where we left off. 

It has been a delight to be part of your Project One a Day, to witness your amazing creativity and drive, combined with community spirit.  What a great way to end your amazing year of creativity; ie cosy, stylish scarves brightening and warming so many lives.  Very very very proud of you!!! 

I've been away on holidays and cannot believe how much has been achieved with this community effort - to such an extent that you have been able to create additional  pieces to complete your amazing  'year of living creatively.'

From our local paper, The Mosman Daily - 'Portrait of lady as reborn artist'  written by Kate Crawford.


Thanks Kate, for your inspiring article on Ruth Faerber - she's 88 and has no intention of retiring and giving up her identity as an artist. She is exhibiting her work at Artarmon Galleries alongside works on paper by late artist John Coburn.  She says, "I find it oddly engaging that the passage of time is represented  by the generation links in the show." 

The exhibition features Faerber's recent digital prints - she reinvented herself as an artist about six years ago to employ new techniques such as inkjet printers.  "I discovered amazing things that could not be done in other ways - the result is not a photograph  but a graphic." she says.

The exhibition continues until next Tuesday, November 9, at Artarmon Galleries at 479 Pacific Highway, Artarmon.  I can feel a 'walk with a purpose' looming on Sunday.
